He wondered if her Love

Was real. Sometimes it felt like Hate

But either way she Has

his heart. He Gave

Her all he could. But it Still

All felt like a Waste

But he did not want his efforts to be a Waste

So he kept that Love

Close to his heart. Hate

Was not what she felt. For she Has

A past filled with pain, and always Gave

Her heart for it to be broken. Still

She knew he was genuine, but Still

She hesitated to dive in. She didn’t want to Waste

Any effort or Love

She truly felt for him. She does Hate

Herself for doing this. Has

She learned nothing? He Gave

Her his full attention, and all she Gave

Him was nothing. But Still

He never saw it that way. Waste

Was not the word to describe the Love

Between them. He knows she feels Hate

Towards herself, and he knows she simply Has

Trust issues. That is why he Has

To keep trying. He Gave

And gave and Still

Kept trying for it to not be a Waste

He knew that she felt Love

For him and wanted her to never Hate

Herself again. He felt Hate

For the man who made her feel like this. He Has

And always will never hurt her. And when she Gave

Her love back, he was overjoyed. She Still

Hesitated at times, but when she kissed him, he knew it wasn’t a Waste

For they have fallen in love.

Hate no longer existed, just love

He Gave her his all and has

Never put it to Waste and she will love him still.

The author's comments:

I included this poem because it was the hardest for me to write. It took me over a whole class just to come up with six words. I did not know what I wanted my theme to be. For me personally, love is the easiest to write. There are so many things that can happen in a relationship, whether it is romantic or not. I like this poem because I honestly was not expecting it to make sense. Writing a sestina is not my type of poem to write.

The process was difficult but my end result was worth it. I started off by grouping six words with a common theme. After I picked those words, I made a story with them. I picked the words love and hate because surprisingly the line is blurry between them. I wanted to make a story using both the words in many different ways.
