Stolen Innocence
Her parents thought she was ready for marriage,
Her pleas to preserve her childhood were denied.
She was merely a child,
the thoughts of her future made her fearful.
Taken from her was her immaturity and innocence,
her hopes and dreams were stolen.
Ripped from her home she was stolen,
Sold for marriage,
No longer allowed her innocence,
Control of her own future, denied.
She knew what was going to become of her and it made her fearful,
Still just a child.
Handed over to an older man, she could’ve been his child
Her purity would be stolen.
What the man was going to do made her fearful.
She was too young for marriage,
and despite her begging she was still denied.
Too young to be seized of her innocence.
He bought her innocence
Why would anyone do this to a child?
Traditions are kept, modern ideas denied
Millions of girls childhoods are stolen.
They’re forced into unwanted marriage
Trapped into life-long commitment, forever fearful.
They don’t care if these girls are fearful,
they ignore the girls innocence,
they think all she’s good for is marriage,
they believe it is perfectly okay to be married as a child,
the girls free will is mercilessly stolen,
any of the girls wants are denied.
Her wishes denied,
made to be fearful,
childhood stolen.
Robbed of her innocence.
A child,
too young for marriage
Wanted for her innocence.
She’s still just a child,
being forced into a marriage

This was a project for my creative writing class, we were challenged to write a sestina poem. I found this very challenging but I am proud of what I have created. I am a senior in high school in Michigan.
