Who Am I?

People ask me where I’m from.

I say, “Korea.”

I predict what comes next.

“South or North?”

I answer, “South.”

People say, “Okay, cool.”

But what if I said, North?

Would their response change?

Sometimes, I want to ask, “Does it matter?”

Does it matter which region I come from?

North and South, both make up Korea.

Just because I’m from North Korea, it doesn’t mean I’m a communist.

But I’m not from North Korea.

Why do I feel like I have to reassure you?

Which ever region I come from, it’s all Korea.

I am Korean.

I’m Korean.

I know people in South Korea who have relatives in North Korea. And it sucks for them. They don't even know if their relatives are alive. They have no contact with them whatsoever. To them, their family is not a communist, or a North Korean. They are just family.
