“The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even heard. They must be felt with the heart”-Said the famous Helen Keller. It was in the winter of 2006 when I had to overcome my obstacle. I was six years old and I lived in West Salem. Much like Helen Keller overcame the obstacle of not being able to communicate, I too overcame the obstacle of my parents splitting up when I was little.
As you know, at the young age of only about two years old, Helen Keller became blind and deaf after an illness occurred. People suggested putting Helen in an asylum after all of the doctors and money the Keller family had spent trying to find a solution to Helens problem. After one more try at finding somebody to help Helen, they came across Annie Sullivan. Annie Sullivan was found to be a great addition to the Keller family. Towards the end of the book and movie, Annie had taught Helen some amazing things, such as how to get Helen to trust Annie so she could get somewhere with her in the first place. Annie Also taught Helen manners and obedience for the dinner table, the fact that things do have a meaning, and sign language so Helen could communicate with others.
Much like Helen Keller, I too overcame an obstacle. When I was about six years old I realized that my parents were not getting along as good as they used to. About the first ten years of my life I had always been a daddys girl and if we were to ever go somewhere I was clenched onto him. You could not get me away from my dad. Then one day I was playing with my older brother  and my parents told me that my dad was going to be moving out of the house while my brother and I were going to be staying where we were with my mom. After my dad moved out of the house, I spent an equal amount of time with both of them so I would be able to overcome my problem of them separating and not living in the same house any more.
I can easily compare my obstacle that I overcame to Helens obstacle that she overcame because we both struggled at a certain time in our life. I can without doubt say that Helens obstacle of being blind and deaf, and not being able to communicate with anybody until Annie came into her life is much more of a struggle that I had with my parents splitting up. They were both times that Helen and I had to overcome, and we did. After Annie came into Helen Kellers family, she made a huge impact on everybody. After my dad moved out, it too made a huge impact on my family, but everything turned out good and better than i thought it was going to be.
Helen and I both overcame obstacles with her not being able to communicate, and me with my parents splitting up when I was little. When I read “The Miracle Worker”, I learned that my obstacle was nothing near as close as Helens was. I also learned from my obstacle that sometimes things just happen for the better. In the famous words of Helen Keller herself, “Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood”.
