The Modern Prohibition
During 1919 and 1920 alcohol distribution was attempted to be put to a halt through prohibition. This was not taken lightly and a massive effort was given but, most of the population was already accustomed to drinking and did not want or feel prohibition was right. So finally it was ended and America was no longer dry. Today America and most of the world can be seen to be in a similar situation, not with alcohol but, with drugs. Drugs today are highly fought against through the war on drugs wasting money, hurting the economy, and stopping society from making use of the benefits to some of these substances.
The government waste a good amount of money into the war on drugs, this amount reaching many billions of dollars. This money instead of being put to stop the flow of drugs between the countries could be put into helping addicts break their addiction starting by wanting to receive help and providing the help they would need. If drugs were legalized the war on drugs would no longer be necessary and would in the long run drastically decrease gang related crimes based on that most of their funds are through drug sales and is a cause of a great amount of the violence between the gangs too. This is due to different gangs selling in another gang so called “territory”.
With the legalization of drugs the government would be given the capability to greatly tax the sale of drugs. This would be very profitable to the government and would allow the United States to decrease the large deficit this great country has created. Even though drugs would now be legal an age requirement would still need to be implemented, this would most likely be similar to the age if not the same age as required to buy alcohol. Along with these, drugs may be legal this does not mean that the all the drugs should be consumed or are they healthy for you. For example, just look at cigarettes and alcohol, both of which may be the worst drugs out there, based upon the mental effects and the physical ones. From this, in the school system drug safety and precautions should be taught and why they should not consume these substances. But, if they still chose to partake in the activity should be taught how to safely do so reducing the chance of self harm and harm to others.
Another problem created through the illegalisation of drugs is then you never truly know what you are buying when you buy one of these illegal substances. A great example of this would be 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine more commonly known as MDMA and the street name Molly and Ecstasy. This substance is a great example because the substance is usually in powder, capsule, or pill form and you truly never know what is in it, more often it is not MDMA. MDMA by itself from what we know today, it does no harm to the human body, mentally or physically. The deaths that have been recorded do not come from MDMA they come from what they have taken to what they believe is MDMA. If drugs were legalized all of this would be put to a stop because then society would have the capabilities and tools to buy the real substance and not buy the terrible fakes. In result, this would greatly decrease harm and fatalities from the use of drugs, causing it to be safer for everyone.
Drugs may have downfalls but, not all of them do. Many drugs out there have many positive aspects to them. For example MDMA, LSD, and Marijuana. All of these have some some of positive aspects that could be used medically to help the citizens. If the drugs were legalized these benefits would be able to be used. This is another strong reason for drugs to be legalized.
There are many different drugs in the world today. Most of them are terrible for the human body mentally and physically. But, this does not mean that all of them are bad. Select few have positive effects that could help society get through some of their problems. Drugs could help the nation financially, mentally, and with the problem of mass violence.
