Don't Let Go
I almost laughed out loud when the couple held hands so tightly they barely made it through the door. He had blond Jesus hair, she with black makeup smeared under her eyes. Hanging on for dear life, they realized the frame was too narrow too late but tried charging through it anyway, as if their love might make the wood expand. It didn’t. Instead what resulted was a funny kind of dance, a flash of clumsy despair. The entrance a tragic barrier trying to keep them apart and destroy their happily ever after.
The gesture was probably sweet in some way: the college kids so afraid of letting go for even a moment, even a doorway. Their love can keep them warm while the ice packs cool their bruised shoulders.
