Treading Water

I step into the cold open ocean alone with only my surfboard. Every inch I paddle farther into the ocean I feel a wave of anxiety crashing through my body. I stopped and needed a moment to breathe, but just like life, the ocean doesn't wait for you to catch your breath. In the midst of inhaling a wave hit me, filling my lung with water instead of air. However, even three feet underwater with fear and fatigue consuming my mind I find peace and float to the surface, for if I fought the current I would've drowned.

For this piece I was tasked with writing a 100-word narrative based on a past life experience. In this narrative I recount a time I went surfing on open water for the first time without the aid of my parents. Upon paddling out to the open oceans I was hit by a surprise wave which had consumed me like a mound of quicksand. In this 100-word narrative I wanted to explore the ideas of waves, and how the ocean itself can often be more than that of a body of water. I wanted to explore the idea that an imposing wave, this massive tide of water, can also double as a chisel. One that shapes us until we become the result of all past challenges that we've face in our lives.
