Questionable Choices
June, 20XX, my friend and I went up to devils lake for camping. We like to go camping every year, it's like our thing. The forest around the lake was beautiful and the lake itself looked like a massive meteor crater or a quarry, the whole lake was surrounded by these high reaching cliff sides and they were covered in this deep green vegetation with lush fauna everywhere. But this story isn't just about the beautiful environment of devils lake, the weird noises we heard at night, or even the awesome lake with its crystal clear cool water, no this story is about a brisk 18 mile hike up and down a small mountain going up almost a mile of elevation and a combined total of 12 hours of hike for the round trip. Now for the reason i'm telling you this story and why i think it's really funny is because of the fact my friend decided to do this hike in just flip flops. Now if you ask him he would say, “He never told me anything about the hike!” which would be a lie because i told him multiple times about how long the journey would be and even when we were walking from camp to the start of the hike i mentioned to him if he was gonna be ok in flip flops and he just goes, “Bro trust me i’ll be fine.” So about an hour or two into the hike he asks if we are almost at the destination to which I reply, “No, I said this would be a long one, we’re probably only half way there.” and his response is just, “We ball” So we continue the perilous journey through the forest and hill side of devils lake. There were many very awesome sights, we saw this downed tree that fell perfectly across this gap that led to this little out-cropping peninsula that overlooked the whole lake. We eventually reach the peak and we decide to take a break and eat some lunch. We sat one this massive boulder, it was cube-like, flat at the top allowing us to see all the way down to the lake now just looking like a swimming pool from the height that we were at. The hard part comes with going down, not physically per say but definitely mentally. It's much easier to hike downhill since you don’t have to fight gravity in fact it's in your favor, but it's a total mental fight since you realize you made it to the summit you're only halfway done. So we begin going back down, feet screaming, some more than others, and nearly completely exhausted.
