Dog Sitting
The dog is watching me from my bed. I didn’t realize he was there at first-- I’d grown used to him leaving with my mom. But slowly, with small sighs and shuffles behind me, he reveals himself. A few weeks ago, when he first arrived, I thought he might stay with me for longer than a moment. Why tonight? He lies by my legs as I carefully, consciously fall asleep. There’s cold light showing under my curtains when I hear him scratching on the inside of my door. I turn the handle, sending him into the house. It’s his decision.
