In this month's TeenInk, Catherine Sleeman's memoir, "Instructions For a Happy Day" stood out to me. In a world of negativity and hardship, it is not often that we are given a genuine reminder of how to see the happier side of life. Sleeman's memoir functions as just that, deliciously specific instructions on how to see the lighter side of life and live happily. Sleeman's piece beautifully describes a single happy day, managing to both vividly detail her writing while still making it relatable to readers.

What struck me most about "Instructions For a Happy Day" was Sleeman's gorgeously poetic language as she explains how important it is to live in the moment and appreciate what surrounds you. The author eloquently phrases profound ideas that can be applied to live a happier life. An example of this, and a line that stood out to me, was "You will live for what it is, not what it is called." This simple yet wise take on daily life is what made this piece so excellent.
