Running on Empty
As a veteran to the horrible feeling after being caught belting power ballads into my hairbrush, I really connected to Michael Gellman’s “Running on Empty.” Michael Gellman perfectly captured the same feeling of terrified embarrassment that I have all too often felt after being seen doing high kicks in grocery store aisles or lip syncing songs into an imaginary microphone at my favorite clothing stores.
Michael Gellman’s story simultaneously made me crack up and jealously covet his writing style. I could completely understand how he felt in that moment because his descriptions were perfect. I could imagine the exact scenario down to every last minute detail. Michael Gellman’s story was witty, well written, and hilarious. If I ever saw him on the subway, I would gladly join him in a duet of “I’ll Make a Man out of You.”
