I was moved by Cara’s article, “Why I Forgot How to Swallow” and can relate heavily to the issue she discusses in her piece. The author reflects about not being able to eat due to the crushing pressure of having her weight and body compared to others. The author uses this situation to argue the negative effects of comparison. While comparison can lead to growth and improvement, I also agree that it has the power to strip down one’s self-worth. Cara notes that in a society as competitive as ours, we cannot help but to compare. On a daily basis, I instinctively compare myself to others as a student, friend, and individual overall. Compulsively comparing ourselves to our peers is a toxic habit instilled in us at an early age. I hope that we, as a society, allow one another to grow and move past this mindset.
