Homework
Homework is a part of our everyday school life, but is it really necessary? What is homework? Homework is schoolwork that we as students do outside of classrooms and after school at home. A lot of people might agree that homework is just stress on a piece of paper. We shouldn’t have to have homework because it doesn’t benefit to our education. Some say that to be able to master a subject its best to embellish and build on information that goes beyond textbooks and teachers. Homework isn’t necessary because of the fact that it takes time away from our social lives, family time and from our sleep time. Homework doesn’t benefit our education because the students don’t remember what to do on their homework when they get home. That’s why in my opinion homework should be banned.
High school students have about 7 classes 4 of them are core classes. We are loaded with so much homework from each class. High school is an opportunity to meet new people and create memories but it’s hard to do that if the only thing you can say is “sorry I can’t make it I have too much homework.” Is there a reason why students have 8 hours of school then be sent home and have more hours to do homework. Since the 19th century homework has been an important topic. By the end of the 19th century the education movement began. There should be some rethinking of homework. Our minds can’t absorb everything we are taught and loading us with homework isn’t the answer. Homework isn’t such a good idea for those students who have talents and want to develop it such has music, art and sports. The parent teacher association (PTA) forced some districts to limit homework assignments. For example in 1901 California lawmakers banned homework for elementary and middle school kids with amazing and progressive movements. In the 1920’s and 30’s people event went against homework after that.
Studies have shown that the application of homework can cause stress to the point where it effects performances in school and on the homework itself not only for one class but the other classes. Homework causes stress, stress causes parents and teenagers to argue because the parents don’t remember what the learned in high school and they are unable to help their teens. Stress causes mood swings. It creates symptoms for example getting snappy and out bursting. They say that homework brings teachers and students closer by talking about the assignments. Not having homework will not only benefit the students but the teachers has well. The teachers won’t be so overwhelmed with grading papers and they will be in better moods. The American child health association joined the campaign against homework saying that it was leading to tuberculosis and heart disease for U.S children.
Homework prepares students for test and they develop responsibility. Punctuality plays a big role in homework because the students need to turn homework in on time but they have other activities that help them with responsibility and punctually like having a job for example. The students can’t turn in homework on time because of their lack of sleep. Homework cause less sleep only 8% of teenagers get the sleep that is necessary for their age. Less sleep causes depression, headaches, and poor performances.
The study online “Journal of the adolescents health” found that 10% of the teens sleep only 5 hours and 23% only sleep 6 hours. Almost 20% of 12 graders are sleep deprived than 9th graders. Teens try to fit in time for family, activities, jobs and homework so they get less sleep trying to squeeze more time. National sleep foundation research shows that delaying school hours an hour will increase sleep time for teens.
In conclusion us has students shouldn’t just stop doing our homework just to prove a point but we just definitely speak up. Not only us students but parents can speak as well if they have concerns on how much homework their child is getting to principals etc. Test already have shown that a senior in high school should only have 2 hours of homework but in some cases only one class takes up an hour and having 7 others is just very stressful.
