The Watchers
I had no idea what to expect. No, I take that back. I expected something to jump at me when I opened the door. I braced myself, preparing for the worst. There was nothing. The only thing in the long corridor was a small envelope lying on the shag carpet. I knelt to pick it up, and opened it as I stood. It was empty. 'Why would they give me this?' I grimaced. 'Because they never want me to figure this out', I thought. As I turned to go back in the room, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. I looked haggard, like I'd aged ten years since this all began. A sudden burst of digital hum from the TV snapped me to attention. A family in a hotel room much similar to mine occupied the screen. For a reason I had yet to find out, I set into a panic. It felt like invisible hands were wrapped around my throat. And that's when it hit me. I had seen that family before. In the lobby, checking in. A single thought penetrated my tidal wave of confusion. 'If I'm watching them, who's watching me?'
