She Remembers

Fedelia stares out the window and she thinks. She remembers when she didn’t have to worry. When she could have candy without ever having to worry about cavities. When boys had cooties, or when going to school was fun. Where everyone played hop-scotch and hide-and-go seek was the game to play. And when only your ears were pierced, and that was called “cool”. She remembers.

She misses her first kiss, and how electricity hit their lips and flowed through them. When she first held hands. Her first hug and how it felt everything had stopped just for them. And how she wanted to hold on. Her ‘I do’. Her daughter’s first cry and how that made her cry. Her daughter’s first word (mommy). She misses when she checked for boogey monsters in the closet and under the bed. Their hugs
