To Build a Fire (Alternatve Ending)
A certain fear of death, dull, and oppressive feeling came to him. This threw him into a panic, and he turned and ran along the old, dim trail. The dog joined in behind him and kept up. The man ran blindly, without intention, in fear such he had never known in his life. The running made him feel better. Maybe if he ran on, his limbs would thaw out, and he would be able to reach camp and the boys. But if he didn’t find them he would soon be dead. He kept this thought in the back of his head and refused to consider it.
Then the man drowsed off into what seemed to him the most comfortable and satisfying sleep he had in his lifetime, questioning right before he fell asleep if it would be his last. The dog sat facing and waiting for the man but….the man was not getting up. The dog started walking away knowing the man was not going to make it much longer, nut then, felt as if the dog owed the man for the compassion and purpose he had given the dog. Trying to surpass these feelings the dog just kept walking to the town where there were other people that would help the dog survive. Not long after, the same feeling came back to the dog, wondering if he should help this human unlike the past humans which he left dead in the wildlife. This was an unfamiliar feeling to the dog, considering his past owners have died instantly or in a fatal accident the dog could not alter. He has used this man for food, fire, and shelter. Doing this is not something the dog regrets, but is something the dog does not take lightly.
Living in Alaska, the dog had grown fond of the human and dog relationship people have created, the dog doing work and not having to worry on where the next meal is coming from. This rule is what the dog has lived by his whole life, but he dog feels something but not sure if its guilt or love. Although the dog is not so sure on what he is feeling he made up his mind on one decision, he will help the man before it is too late. The dog knowing the town is close and the man not having much time, the dog begins to run, and a few moments later the dog finds that he is not only running, but is sprinting, faster and faster hoping the invisible time watch of his owners life will not run out. The dog begins to get close to the town he is somewhat familiar with. The dog is worn out from sprinting once he reaches the town. Not knowing what to do the dog begins to run around, looking for familiar people who might help. The dog instantly runs for the boy, he had met this person before and hopes this human can help. The dog began to scratch at the boy’s door, hoping he would answer. The boy heard the scratching and began to investigate. The boy opened the door and saw the familiar dog. The boy panicked…the dog should be with his owner on the trail and not at the door. The boy became alert, the man is in trouble. The boy quickly put his clothes on, hitched up his dogs to the sled and followed the dog. The dog again found himself sprinting toward where he left the man clinging to his life. The dog didn’t have to look back for the sled; he heard the breaths of the team of dogs and knew they were behind him. The dog then cut a corner and found the man in the snow, was he breathing, the dog would not know but the boy would soon figure out. The boy halted his dogs, jumped off his sled and ran to the man. The boy knew what to do; he began to check for a pulse. At first the boy couldn’t find it but then he began to feel it, slowly but surely the blood was pumping threw the man. A flow of relief came over the boy but not for long. He knew the man was alive but not sure for how much longer. The boy quickly put the man on the front of the dog sled and mushed. He was going to go to the hospital in town where the man could hopefully be saved. The boy began to race, following the tracks he had left behind him and back to the town where he had come from. He reached the hospital, jumped off his sled and sprinted into the three room hospital. The doctor and nurse rushed the man in and got him into a medical bed. The doctor began to check for hypothermia and started to slowly heat the man back up. The doctor told the boy to leave the hospital, and sleep.
So that is what the boy did; adding the dog to his dog team and sleeping through the night. The next morning the boy again went to the hospital with the dog that alarmed the boy about the man. The boy brought the dog in the hospital and asked to see the doctor. The doctor began to speak, and the dog saw the boy’s face lighten up. This expression ensured the man will be alright and no matter what limbs the man would lose, the dog will have the same owner for a good time to come.
