It was another day in paradise for Jennifer Camson because she knew that today would be the day she talks to Chloe Gillson. Chloe Gillson was the popular girl in school, she bullied everyone! Including Jennifer. Jennifer saw Chloe standing at her locker fiddling with her locker combination. Jennifer started to slowly walk toward her, “H-hey, can I ask you something?” she asked with a shy smile.
“What?” Chloe snapped back.
“I wanted to know . . . I wanted to know why you are so mean to me?” Jennifer finally got out.
“Are you serious?” she said with an attitude getting closer to Jennifer.
“Umm, yeah."
“You know what you did,” Chloe said about one centimeter away from Jennifers face, then she started to walk away. Jennifer caught Chloe before she got too far.
“What?” Jennifer asked holding Chloe back.
“Oh puh-lease, you know what happened! Don’t play dumb with me,” Chloe yelled in her snobby way and stomped off. Jennifer stood in the school hallway hopelessly, while the bell rang.
“Oh great! Late for history class ahhgain!”Jennifer muttered to herself as she scurried off to history class.
That night at dinner Jennifer brought up the problem she was having with Chloe to her mom. Jennifer was helping her mom wash the dishes. Her mom would wash and Jennifer would dry.
“Hey mom, Chloe has been really mean to me lately and I asked her what the deal was and she said that I knew what I did, in this really mean way. I told her that I didn’t have a clue about what she was talking about and . . ..”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on and take a breather first all right,” they both took deep breaths, “O.K. know you may continue.” Jennifer's mom said putting the last stack of plates in the coubert.
Jennifer took a deep breath, then continued,”Where was I, oh yeah, and she didn’t even look at me the rest of the day, and if she did she gave me dirty looks! Can you believe her mom! I mean what! What could I or we possibly do that is sooo terrible! Ugghh, I just get so worked up over these things!”
“O.K. lets just calm down. Did you ever do anything to her that could’ve made her mad but you just didn’t realize it?” Jennifer’s mom asked her as she got up and got a glass of water from the spigot that drips like crazy.
“I, I don’t know! I don’t even really talk to her, but whatever because I’m going to go write in my journal.”
Jennifer was writing frantically about her problems with Chloe. Jennifer still didn’t have a clue but she was going to ask Chloe again tomorrow. Jennifer was talking while she was writing, “. . . Chloe is a little rich, snobby, I’m prettier than everyone girl! And I’m sick of it, this problem isn’t about me it’s about her, and getting her popularity up, I bet she even keeps score!” Jennifer was on fire, her face was probably redder than her red shirt that said love in the center of it in big bold bubble letters. To let off some steam she went for a run on her treadmill down in her basement. Jennifer ran a mile and a half and then she got to work, she was going to get to the bottom of this no matter what.
Jennifer called her best friend Alice, and they planned to put an end to this bullying, together.
“O.K. , how about during lunch we go and interview everyone who has been bullied by Chloe and . . ..”
Jennifer was interrupted by Alice, “But, they need to know not to tell Chloe what we’re doing or else . . ..”
“Yes! You’re right, she and her rich friends can’t find out! Or else . . ..” the girls both laughed, whenever Chloe got mad at someone and didn’t know what to say she just said, “Or else.”
It has been a week of interviewing and the girls didn’t get the information they wanted, so they decided that Friday they are going to spy on Chloe at her house and see what she’s hiding.
“Okay, did you get the snacks and drinks,”Jennifer whispered putting on her backpack. Her backpack had binoculars, a blanket with a mini pillow, a rope, and lots of chocolate snacks.
Alice started singing a stocker song she saw on YouTube, “Tip-toe by the window. . ..”
“Shhhhhh!”
“What, they can’t hear us.”
“Whatever Alice,” Jennifer whispered as she smacked her aside of the head.
“What was that for,” Alice complained rubbing her head.
"Really, what was that for, come on we are here to find out what she's hiding! Hugh," Jennifer groaned, "Now focus!"
At this point the girls spotted Chloe in what almost had to be her room, it was covered in pink everything and it was all so fancy, it was definitely her room.
"It has to be her room," Jennifer stated.
"No doubt about it!"
"How will we get up there though," Jennifer wondered as she stared at the window to Chloe's room.
"Ummm. . . Oh hey look this vine goes straight up the side of the house we can just climb up it and . . .."
Jennifer interrupted,"You want me to climb up there. Ha, that's a good one have you seen me in PE."
"Do you want to see what she's hiding or not!" Alice whisper shouted.
Jennifer groaned again,"Fine."
"O.k., let's do this."
The girls climbed their way up to the window of Chloe's room,"What now," Jennifer asked Alice in her softest whisper tone.
"Um we wait till she leaves the room dummy."
"What if she doesn't?"
"Don't worry she will, you just gotta wait it out," Alice whispered, she was checking the room over like a hawk, "What did you not do this before?"
"No, have you," Jennifer asked very curiously.
"No I'm just messing with you, O.K., time to focus."
Jennifer and Alice both looked liked rag dolls hanging on a window, because really that’s what it was. Then it started to rain, hard.
“Oh great, rain, just what we needed,” Jennifer whined losing her grip on the window seal.
“Chloe left her room,” Alice announced, “O.K., lets climb in.”
Alice jumped in right away, “Wait, you’re all wet!” Jennifer said with her huge eyes bulging out of her head.
“We’re fine,” Alice said with the calmest voice ever, it wasn’t even like she was aware she was breaking into her enemies house.
They were both in the room ready for action, then they heard footsteps.
“In the closet,” Alice whispered shoving Jennifer in to the humongous walk-in-closet. Shoes, about one million pairs. Clothes, everywhere. Accessories, out the wazoo, purses, sunglasses, bracelets, necklaces, and the list can go on and on.
Alice and Jennifer heard Chloe enter the room, they both looked at each other with blank faces. They could hear Chloe talking to herself, “Dear diary,” Chloe started,“people at school are turning against me. . ..”
“I wonder why,” Jennifer said under her breath in a sarcastic way , Alice didn’t even hear what she said.
Chloe continued,”people think that I’m really mean but I just . . ..” her phone rang, and she stopped in the middle of her sentence. Alice and Jennifer were so tense waiting to hear what she was going to say that Jennifer lost balance and fell hitting her head off of the closet door.
Chloe heard the bang and hung up the phone, she walked slowly to the closet door, then opened it.
Chloe gasped,”What are you doing here!”
Alice and Jennifer gave a shy smile, then Alice said,”Funny story actually.”
“Oh really cause I’m sure the cops would love to hear a funny story.”
All three girls stood face to face, all looking quite serious.
“Spill, why are you in my room, no even better why are you in my house!” Chloe stampered, doing these ridiculous hand motions that only popular people would understand.
“Well, umm, ya see . . ..” Jennifer stuttered, everything in her body was shaking because she was so nervous.
“Spill!”
“O.K., here’s the deal,” Jennifer said,”we snuck into your house to see what you were hiding. Mainly this was all my idea, so if you were to punish anyone it would be me, not Alice.”
“What I was hiding?” Chloe repeated with her raised eyebrow.
“Umm, yeah.”
“Why would you think I would be hiding something?”
“Well Chloe it’s not that you’re not a great person it’s just that, well . . ..”
“Well what!” Chloe shouted, it probably woke up the whole town.
“Well, you’ve been really mean to everyone and we thought that you might of been hiding a secret or something.”
Chloe laughed her pathetic, I’m better than you laugh and then that laugh went to silence, then to sobbing, “You’re right, I have been a real idiot lately. I mean how could I do that to people, I feel so bad.”
Jennifer walked toward her and Alice followed. Jennifer patted her hesitantly on the shoulder, Jennifer had never been so close to Chloe before. The room was dead silent. Chloe was still sobbing and Alice finally broke the silence, ”Hey, you could tell us what ever you need to let out,” She gave a thumbs up to Jennifer. Jennifer frowned and lipped, “Stop, we are going to help her.” with a quit it hand motion.
“Jennifer,” Chloe said sniffling, “The reason why I bullied you was because I was afraid of living in your shadow.”
Jennifer and Alice both looked at each other in amazement, “Why would you think that?”
"Because . . .." she started saying, "Because, remember in the second grade when your dad would go on all of these business trips and bring you back all these cool souvenirs? Well yeah, all my dad did was give me twenty dollars and say, 'Go to the mall and buy yourself something pretty.'"she grabbed a clean-x and blew her nose. Then she said,"Like, remember that time your dad went to China and brought you back all of this China stuff?"
"Yeah," Jennifer replied.
"Well, that next day at school everyone wanted to see everything and everyone liked you instead of me because you were the one with the cool dad!"
"But Chloe, that was in the second grade why does it matter now?"
Chloe looked down at her fingers searching for an answer, "I just don't want that to happen again, I-I guess."
"Look you're Chloe Gillson, and I'm Jennifer Camson, you have nothing to worry about! So, come here," Jennifer said as they both hugged each other.
"Hey I'm really sorry I was mean to you."
"Hey Chloe, it's O.K.! Being mean isn't as bad as breaking into, well climbing into someones house!" the girls all laughed.
"Hey, we aren't going to jail are we?" Alice joked, they all laughed again.
"Do you guys want to stay over?" Chloe asked.
"Sure we would love to stay over! Wow, those are words I thought I would never say to Chloe Gillson," Jennifer said as they all locked arms and then said, "Best friends forever!"
