Camping
It was a nice sun drenched day, I was wearing my scout uniform. The uniform was a plaid shirt with achievements and ranking on it. On top of the shirt was a neckerchief with a neckerchief slide to keep the neckerchief in place. My pants had a belt attached, so I did not have to go through the trouble to put in on.We hiking to our campsite. All of us were tired and we had just reached had our campsite. It was horrendous, with barely any clear space to set up tents. Insects were everywhere, so you couldn’t sit down without getting a dozen ticks sucking on your blood. Even worse, the bathrooms looked like bathrooms straight out of hell. They were painted a horrible muddy green color that made you puke just by looking at them. And the inside of them were even worse! The faucets were dripping and leaking, and the toilet seats were covered in dried brown matter. The floors were soaked with suspicious fluids, and the toilet paper dispensers were vandalized so they said horrible things. The benches barely held together because previous campers had misemployed the benches. Previous campers had gouged inappropriate messages in the benches with pocket-knives. We set up our tents and claimed benches for our patrols makeshift kitchen. For dinner we had sausages and chicken, the problem was that the chicken wasn't cooked properly and the sausages kept on falling on the ground. So we had nothing to eat. After the subpar dinner the adults told us some really frightening ghost stories. Then we walked to our tents, we had a hard time sleeping because one of the older scouts kept on scaring us in the middle of the night.
The next morning I woke up very groggy. We ate half cooked oatmeal then we dressed into our scout uniform for the competition. Then we walked to an opening with few trees and a bench. They showed us a knot we raised our hands up first. Once he raised his hand the adult called on him and he said “Bowline knot,” he was correct. We were leading 1 to 0. Then the adults tied another knot, the other team quickly raised their hand. Then a boy answered “Two Half Hitches,” he was wrong. Our patrol could not
believe our luck, we thought the older kids would beat us in very little time. The same boy who had raised his hand last time raised his hand again and said very confidently “Clove Hitch,” we were correct. It was 2 to 0, we were leading, the adults tied another knot. The older kid patrol raised their hand up first he uttered with a lot of insecurity “Sheet Bend,” he was correct and dumbfounded that he got the answer correct. The score was 2 to 1 it was getting close, we had to win since it would be our only way of getting points which go toward our annual court of honor. You can get points by doing good deeds or just by winning troop competitions and whatnot. The Court of Honor is where they see which patrol has the most points. Which ever patrol has the most points, every member in the patrol gets prizes. The adults tied on final knot the other patrol’s hands raised up first, they said “Square Knot,’’ they were wrong. Then we raised our hands and said “Taut-line Hitch,’’ we were devastated. Our patrol thought it was the Taut-line Hitch. We went home both happy and we never had feuds between our patrols.
