Summer Air
There’s just something in the summer air.
And I love every. Single. Moment.
I love the whisper of the trees against my bare arms, finally free to breathe; I love the smell of the morning dew filling my nose and leveling my breaths. The chirp, chirp, chirp of birds fills me with this childlike joy that energizes my entire being. My insides warm under the heat of the bright sun, my organs humming to the same rhythm.
All around me, Mother Earth is smiling, she’s happy, she’s so very glad to see her old friends again. She says hello to the green grass, she sings along with the birds and she jumps along with the crickets. She dances with the wind and plays under the sun and she says enjoy it. Enjoy it while it lasts.
And I do.
I dance under the sun, I play in the grass, I let my hair fall down my shoulders and I breathe.
I breathe in the smells and the sights of the summer and I think: I never want it to end.
I celebrate the summer with hugs and laughter and the simple pleasure of just being loved. I love the fearlessness bursting in my stomach when I’m around them, our hair shining under the sunlight as we dance in the warm sand; we run through the grass barefooted; we tell stories around ice cream.
We make memories that will last forever.
And I love that I can spend the summer with him, indulging in that bubbly feeling I get when we’re together. I savor every moment I have with him, because just for the summer he is mine. And although his heart is set on someone else, it’s the simple days by the cool ocean water that remind me that I can still love him, just in a different way.
Soon, the sun will set on summer. But I’ll be waiting right here, arms wide open, when it comes up again.
