From Friends to Enemies
“Dang it, not again,” Monica stated, realizing she had once again lost the game.
“Yes!” Laila yelled after winning for the 5th time in a row.
The two best friends had been playing Mario Kart for the past hour. Monica wasn’t going to stop until she won a game, which she had yet to do. This is something the girls have done every day after school since they were 10, they are now 15. They are about to enter high school in the fall, but things between them have never changed. The girls have been friends since they could remember and their parents were all best friends until Monica’s parents got a divorce a few years back. The only thing that made her happy after things was playing Mario Kart, and who better to play with than her best friend. Every weekend she spent the night with her dad but during the week she was home with her mom. When school starts she won’t be able to go to her dad’s house every other week, but she would still be able to talk to him all she wanted. In the meantime to forget about things like always, she played the game with Laila.
Laila on the other hand had it a bit harder, her parents were also divorced but for a different reason. Her mom was caught cheating on her dad, which led to their divorce. She stayed with her dad and wasn’t allowed to see her mom, because her mom didn’t really want anything to do with either of them after the divorce. For months she cried and cried about her mom leaving, she didn’t understand why her mom would cheat and leave. She thought it was because she was the reason things happened, even after her dad and Monica’s family told her otherwise. She has finally gotten used to the way things are even though it’s only been around a year. No one knows who she was cheating with or how long.
“Monica, Laila, please come down,” Lailas’ dad yelled up the stairs. They always played games at Laila’s house. “ We have to go or we’ll be late.”
Monica was always going out with them and Laila went out with Monica and her mom on occasion. People always think they are related because of their curly hair and beautiful brown eyes. When they went places together, there was never any seclusion because both the families were just like a real family. They did things together all the time and it was rare to see them apart. Today they were going to the movies to see the latest scary movie out. They knew they would be scared but that’s why they loved going. Neither of them had boyfriends to do things with so it was always just them, they both hoped high school would change that for the better.
High school was their year, the year they were going to get boyfriends and they didn’t even want to be popular, but they were okay with that. They had always been the only people each other needed, no one else. They weren’t scared of fitting in, they never had that problem, they just wanted to have more people to talk to besides each other.
High school was starting the next day and the girls were super excited. They had their outfits picked and lunches made. They spent their last day making sure they were completely ready for what was ahead, but they were not ready for the huge change coming to them…
