Freshman Year
It was freshman year. Emily was really nervous to start high school, she didn’t know where anything was nor did she even know what she was doing. She wasn’t alone though that’s how it is for every incoming freshman. This is a dramatic change from middle school, instead of just seeing all her friends from one school, it was all the schools combined together. She only hung around the kids from her middle school. I mean there were kids that she knew from the other schools, but wasn’t really close with them. Before she knew it, she was picking out her clothes for her first day of high school. Wow time really does go fast. She was just an 8th grader.
Emily woke up to her alarm playing her favorite song, “Crazy Girl” by the Eli Young Band. It always gets her going. It was still dark outside and her room was pitch black. She turned on her lamp that lays there on her nightstand. It was brighter than the sun on a sunny day. She took a sip of water from her water bottle and then got up and got ready to take a shower. Before Emily hopped in, she shuffled her country playlist so she could have a concert in there too. You could say her shower took at least half an hour. She pulled the curtains back and stepped out onto the brown fuzzy rug. It felt good on her feet. Emily went back upstairs so she could blow dry her hair. Her wet hair left a spot on the back of her shirt. She hates that. After she got done with her hair and everything, she threw on her uniform. Emily enjoys going to a private school, it is so much easier to get dressed when you know everyone is wearing the same thing.
Now since she’s only a freshman she hasn’t been able to take drivers ed yet so her parents make her older brother take her. They usually leave around 7:30 because school doesn’t start til 8:10. 7:30 rolled around the corner and Emily walked outside breathing in that fresh air, feeling the bitterice in her nose and her mouth. It is cold. The car was covered in frost and it made the inside of the car very cold. Her school is only about 5 minutes away from her house but they stopped at Mcdonalds to pick up some breakfast before school. Emily usually orders the hotcakes with two sausages instead of one. The juiciness of the sausages made for a taste that was so delicious. The hotcakes were so fluffy that it was easy to cut them into bite size pieces.
Emily finished her breakfast just in time. She grabbed her bookbag and took her first steps into what we like to call high school. What caught her eye first was the sign that read “Welcome class of 2022!” To think that Emily is now a freshman in high school, it’s a little overwhelming. The amount of kids that were there was also nerve wracking. She didn’t know where to go first but in the back of the commons there stood all her friends. “Isn’t this crazy!! We’re freshman what the heck?!?” Said Jasmine, one of Emily’s friends. “I can’t believe it, wasn’t it just yesterday that we were 8th graders. Although it may seem like they're cool, calm, and collected, freshmen were the least liked by all of the upperclassmen. Mr. DelaRosa, our school principal got everyone’s attention. “Alright students, everyone should know who their homeroom teachers are. Now I know you guys might be used to getting a new homeroom teacher every school year but this teacher you will have until you graduate. Along with the same students. First thing on the list is go to your classroom and your teacher should explain the game plan. Remember to have fun and welcome to Heelan High School!”
All of the kids were stoked. You could hear the sound of stomping feet throughout the school. Objects were shaking in teachers rooms. You could tell each student was in their classroom because the hallways were as quiet as a mouse. Here we walk into emily's room and you can hear Mr. Johnson introduced himself. “Hello everyone, I'm Mr. Johnson, i’ll be your homeroom teacher for the next four years. If I'm going to be honest I don’t really like freshman, I mean no teacher does but trust me when your sophomores next year I'll start liking you a lot more and I think every teacher can agree. Anyways moving on, you have everything you need on your desk including planners that will hopefully last you the entire year but if you tend to somehow lose it, they cost five dollars in the office.”
Emily took a glance at everyone who was in her homeroom and she waved to one of her friends, Jasmine who was in the right back corner of the room. “Now I know some of you may know each other but there are probably people who don’t so we're going to play a little game where we go around the room and introduce one another. You're also going to say at least one thing about yourself that you think we should know about you” Everyone introduced themselves and then the bell rang to go to their first period class. Freshman English was her first class and Emily was already getting nervous but it faded away when she saw some of her friends were in there too. “Alright everyone, today i’m just going to explain everything we will be doing throughout the school year so no homework for today.” Said Mrs. Garcia. That’s what every teacher's game plan for the day was. The last bell rang and it was time to go home. Emily was so excited to share her first day with everyone.
~Skipping through the next five months~
Every year the school puts on a snowball dance around the month of december. It’s usually for the freshman because it’s their first school dance. Emily didn’t really care if she had a date or not, she was still going to go with her friends and have fun. The dance was still a couple weeks away so she still had some time. In one of her classes she had met this guy named Kevin. They talked all the time and then one day Emily asked for his Snapchat and he gave it to her. Emily and Kevin didn’t talk all that much at first outside of school but one day, Kevin had put a picture of this puppy who he had just adopted recently. Emily replied back and that’s when their relationship started. Kevin had this girl's best friend named Jessica and she thought it was a good idea to get Kevin to ask Emily to the danceie He wasn’t so sure at first but after getting to know her there was no one else he’d rather go with. They started getting really close and started hanging out outside of the school. They would go to basketball games together or even just went to go get ice cream. Emily never wanted to get feelings for him because she only thought of him as a friend but all the effort he was trying to do to please Emily made her feel all cozy inside. Eventually she started to fall for him but she didn’t want anyone to know.
The dance came along a couple weeks later and Emily was getting all dolled up. One of her friends named Melanie did her makeup and Emily did her hair. Her makeup took awhile to do so she hardly had any time to do her hair. It looked like a mess and wasn;’t the impression she wanted to make to Kevin. Two hours later, Kevin went over to Emily’s house and picked her up. Before they could leave, Emily’s parents wanted to take their own pictures before they went to another girls house to get more pictures and for Emily to meet Kevin's parents. Kevin's parents adored her and really liked her personality. Emily was really nervous at first but calmed down when members of her group arrived because it wasn’t so awkward anymore.
The dance was filled with so many kids. Emily and Kevin made their way into the dance and all of their friends were standing right there, cheering them on for some odd reason. It lasted for at least two hours but there were some people who got bored so they left. They were some of those people. Kevin was all nervous because he didn't know what to do next. Does he take her home, or do they go back to his house? The other members of the group thought it was a good idea to go back to Kevin’s house and watch a movie so that’s what they did. The night ended with Kevin and Emily cuddling together on the couch and watching “Blended.”
