In English my name means, “God is gracious”. It’s the color yellow. Bright and uplifting. The “I” acts as a smile, warm and welcoming. It brings sunshine to a stormy day. It’s original. It’s a gallery of unique, abstract works of art. My name has Italy written all over it.

St. Gianna was a hero. She gave up her life to save her child’s. She gave the name Gianna meaning. Strong. Faithful. Selfless. My mom was inspired by her story, so she named me Gianna. I am proud to be named after such a strong person. I wouldn’t change it.

When you hear the name Gianna you may think strong or serious. Not me though. I am competitive. Driven. A ball of energy. Happiness radiates off me like sun rays. When you see me I am most likely laughing—my second language.

Substitute teachers are rough. Confusion smothers their face as they reach my name. They take an extra long pause. My name turns their brains into scrambled eggs. “Is it gee-nah? gee-anne-ah?” Close, its Gee-ah-na.

My name is lengthy. It’s a long, bumpy road filled with twists and turns. People look for shortcuts all the time. Some people call me Jahna because it’s less syllables. Most people call me G because it’s quick and easy.

I’ve been called G most of my life. It fits me well. It’s short and simple. It radiates happiness like the sun radiates warmth. It’s like butter on a piece of toast. It’s easy going. The complexity and sophistication of the name floats away with the extra letters. Simple, and carefree. Just like me.
