The Dominant Emotion of Chapter 24
Jade decides to go to the Dairy Queen with the $20 that her mom gave her. The Dairy Queen is very crowded. While ordering her food Jade notices a group of boys talking about the woman in the restaurant. Some the boys make their way to talking about Jade. One of the boys say that he thinks Jade is 5, but one of the other boys disagrees and says she lower. Then, one of the boys dares his friend to go talk to Jade, when he tries to talk to her Jade, she ignores him. The boy gets mad and starts to make comments about her wait and her appearance. She still ignores him and walks with her food to her bus stop; she is so embarrassed that she takes the bus and eats her food at home.
The most dominant emotion is this chapter is embarrassment. In this chapter Jade becomes the laughingstock of a group of boys. In the beginning of the chapter one of the boys talks about Jade from the Dairy Queen tables and he says, “Man, she’s so big she breaks the scale.” They say this with no care for Jade’s feelings. Jade is embarrassed by this comment. Then, one of the boys in the group comes up to Jade after Jade picks up her food, then the boy says to her face “Aw, so it’s like that, forgot you then. Don’t nobody want you fat a** anyway. Don’t know why you up in a Dairy Queen. Need to be on a diet.” This comment is so hurtful. After Jade hears this from this inconsiderate boy, she is so embarrassed she doesn’t want to stay in this Dairy Queen, so she takes her food to go and leaves on her bus. She decided she’s going to eat her food at home. Jade knowing that multiple people from the Dairy Queen saw that confrontation makes her even more embarrassed. Therefore, I think embarrassment is the dominant emotion in this chapter.
