Silence
White everywhere. An annoying beeping sound ringing in my ears. Where am I? I wince when I try to sit up, but fail and drop back. My eyes are glued to the ceiling. What happened? A sharp pain shoots through my arm when I try to lift it. Then I remember. A loud bang. The ceiling has collapsed. I’m trapped under one of the beams. I can feel the flames approaching ever so slowly, like a lion. And I’m the prey. I close my eyes, hoping, praying that I won’t feel that much pain before I die. Then in the blink of an eye, the beam is gone. I’m floating in the air, no. I’m being carried. I look up at my saviour and smile. It’s him. The smoke brings tears to my eyes and pours into my lungs. I can’t breathe. “It’ll be okay.” I hear him whisper. After that everything goes black. I’m brought to the present when squeaking wheels pass by my door. I jerk the I.V. out of my arm and stumble out of bed. The floor shocks my feet from the cold and I hurry over to the door. I carefully put my ear to it and listen for anyone. Silence. I open it and cringe when the hinges creak loudly, sending a shiver down my spine. I peer out. No one seems to be around. While I make my way to the front desk, I notice that something isn’t right. The abnormal quietness is deafening and I couldn’t even hear my heart rate monitor anymore. Where is everyone? I rush to the front doors and burst through, relieved that I’m out of that odd hospital. I look around and realize that there still isn’t any sound. My heart skipped a beat when I finally heard faint footsteps until they stopped. “Hello?”, I shout out, hoping to get an answer. No reply. I couldn’t stand this! There was no breeze, no animals. Not even the sweet sound of a cricket. Only the rapid beating of my heart until I hear the footsteps again. I turned slowly when they got closer to me and stared in shock. That shock turned to relief when I realized who it was. It was him again. “I missed you.” “I missed you too,” I whisper with joyful tears beginning to form. It had been such a long time since I had seen him, before last night. And I now knew where I was. Because a world with only me and him... is heaven.
