Too Young
Mom, why can’t I stay up late? Jessie gets to all the time. (Pause.) So what, if I’m only five years old, Jessie’s only thirteen! He’s always having friends over and staying in his room with them all night. You never disturbed him when Candy or Betsy or Christy or Alexia came over. Why do you have to check on me? Why can’t I do the things Jessie does in his room with his friends? (Pause.) What do you mean I’m too young? Jessie’s young too, Mom. Why can’t I stay up late? Why can’t I have some guy friends over for the night? Why can’t I kiss the guys at school? (Pause.) I can’t stand being little. I hate you! I can’t wait to grow up!!
