The Backpack

She billed up the last customer in the aisle, bagged up their items and unexpectedly caught herself smiling a goodbye. It even took her by surprise, catching her reflection in the window display. She had smiled. She had finally  smiled. For her, the past few months had just been going by, in the same clockwork monotone. But, yesterday was the day it all changed.  Yesterday gave her a new ray of hope for the future .Everything that's he had been saving and hoping for. A new monogrammed backpack for her son, to replace his old and tattered grey one. As trivial and futile as it may seem, just imagining her son, walking down the hallways in his new red and yellow backpack, gave her the pleasure of immense happiness. Abruptly, her thoughts were scattered. A loud cacophony of high schoolers entered the supermarket. There were about 8 of them, looked like they had just gotten out of school, laden with their heavy backpacks and copious amounts of worksheets. The youngest of the lot, caught her eye. Something about him looked familiar she thought. She carefully looked at him, examining each and every aspect. His clothes. His hair. His backpack. She sensed discomfort, but shook it away. It's quite common for two boys to have the same backpack, with the same initials and the same color, right?
