The Monster of Loss
They're gone.
They just disappear.
Never to be seen again.
It's quiet,
Devouring them in silence.
It leaves no trace of them.
Except when it does;
When there's that hint, that sight, that scent;
When it won't let you forget them,
And each memory is like a stab of its knife.
It savors the darkness.
It sticks to the shadows.
And as much as you wish it would never find you,
The odds are never in your favor.
It leaves you with a cold, empty feeling,
With regret and sadness,
And with a fear, yet a desire,
That it will come for you next.

We were talking about monsters in English class and asked to write a poem about a figurative monster. This is what I came up with and I thought I'd share it. I'd be very open to any critiques or criticism or suggestions. Thanks for reading!
