"Do not let anyone think less of you because you are young, be an example to all believers."

Say goodbye, for who knows how long
Some seven hours later, you will be a foreigner in an unknown world
With only your life in 13 storage boxes
Stare out at the sunset behind the mountains
The bustling city of New York is gone
This struggling shoe-making pueblo, Elda, remains
Your best friends will be Heartache, Fear, and Excitement
Yet, you have finally started to make a few new friends
For once, they understand you
For once, you understand them
For once, you feel ready to enjoy life again
But there is a dilemma:
Hang out with these new friends
Or go to dinner with family in Alicante
Could this be a once in a lifetime opportunity?
This is family; you must go
Now followed their lead: two kisses—one on each cheek
Don’t forget to smile and nod—a lot

Enter the restaurant and wait for the table
Why, there are three tables
and a cake,
and balloons,
and presents,
and 30 friends
“Felicidades, Blessing!”
Have you completely forgotten,
Amidst the homesickness?
It is your Quinceñera,
No, the cake is not made from flour
No, the cards are not written in English
Yet, you have never felt more at home
You cry
The struggle to adapt is over
You, Foreigner, finally belong

This piece derived from a personal experience that changed me forever. I felt that as a poem it might have the same effect on others.
